EEW SPC impresses with coating innovation

The automated application of Thermal-Sprayed-Aluminium (TSA) for monopiles went operational.

At the beginning of 2017, the world’s first construction site for the automated application of Thermal-Sprayed-Aluminium (TSA) for monopiles went operational and is proving to be double as fast as conventional coating techniques.

This innovative coating concept was applied in cooperation with KREBS Korrosionsschutz GmbH in the offshore wind project Arkona, a Joint Venture of E.ON and Statoil, for the first time. Not only could the coating be carried out more quickly than planned but also the quality achieved by the coating regarding uniformity, flatness, dimensional stability and optical impression is convincing.

For this contract, the outside surface was completely coated with aluminium including sealing with Epoxy (synthetic resin). Due to the “self-healing”, long-term behaviour, the chemical reactions of the monopile foundations make any additional cathodic protection, e.g. sacrificial anodes, unnecessary. In addition, corrosion protection repairs in the TSA-coated areas can be omitted, which becomes a particularly significant factor over an operating period of more than 20 years and is therefore cost-effective. Furthermore EEW SPC can make a major contribution to reducing environmental impact compared to conventional cathodic protection systems.

With the TSA-process, monopiles with a diameter of up to 10 m and a length of up to 100 m can be coated in serial production.
