EEW SPC loads first monopile for Arkona

On Thursday 17th August 2017, the first monopile was loaded at the quay of the Rostock foundation manufacturer EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH for the offshore wind farm Arkona, a Joint Venture of E.ON and Statoil.

EEW SPC was awarded the contract for a total of 60 monopiles for this wind park in the Baltic Sea, which is practically on the doorstep. The monopiles have a diameter of between 7.0 m and 7.75 m and weigh up to 1,200 tonnes. Since the start of production in September 2016, approximately 53,000 tonnes of steel has been processed.

In cooperation with the company KREBS Korrosionsschutz GmbH, the world’s first plant for the automated application of Thermal-Sprayed-Aluminium (TSA) went into operation for the first time and for this contract. In a new production area built by KREBS especially for this purpose, 60,000 m² were fully coated with a layer of aluminium including sealing with Epoxy (synthetic resin). Due to the special effectiveness of the anti-corrosive coating, there is no need for additional cathodic protection, e.g. sacrificial anodes. The quality achieved by the coating regarding uniformity, evenness, dimensional stability and optical impression was also convincing.

Due to their high weight per unit, the monopiles will be loaded with a tandem lift. One loadout per day has been planned. The foundations will be floated to the construction area, where the offshore installation work will then be carried out.
