Vattenfall awards monopile contract to EEW SPC

EEW SPC to supply the foundations for Nordlicht 1 and 2 OWF.

Two contracts for the delivery of 112 monopiles were signed between Vattenfall and EEW SPC on 30 January 2025, this follows EEW SPC being nominated as a preferred supplier in October 2024.

EEW SPC will process a total of around 141,000 tonnes of steel at their Rostock site for the Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind project. The monopiles will all have a diameter of 10 metres.

"We are delighted that we are now managing our fifth offshore wind project for Vattenfall as part of our well established partnership. This project also contributes to the further expansion of renewable energies in the German North Sea," says Sebastian Mönnich, Head of Project Management at EEW SPC, who has managed all five Vattenfall projects to date.

Pending a final investment decision, which is expected in 2025, offshore construction for Nordlicht 1 and 2 is anticipated to begin in 2026, with full operational status expected by 2028. Vattenfall is developing and building the Nordlicht cluster, with BASF as a key partner owning 49% of the projects. Production at the Rostock plant is planned from the end of 2025 to mid-2027.

The 980 MW Nordlicht 1 offshore wind farm will have 68 monopiles; Nordlicht 2, with a 630 MW connection, will proudly stand on 44 foundations. Scheduled for commissioning in 2028, the projects in the German North Sea will generate enough green energy to meet the electricity demands of over 1.7 million German households.

Cyril Moss, Executive Project Director for Nordlicht cluster at Vattenfall comments: “For more than a decade, we at Vattenfall have put our trust in EEW to produce and deliver monopiles for a number of our windfarms. On Nordlicht, we will again rely on their expertise and dedication to meet our requirements and to enable us to deliver on our renewable energy commitments and on the next phase of Germany’s energy transition.”
