Developing new foundations Components for Floating Structures EEW Group Products Structural Pipes Offshore Wind Components for Floating Structures Going forward for new foundations Since most coastal areas are already equipped with offshore wind turbines, consideration must be given to how the wind far off the coast can be used to generate energy. As the water depth is much deeper than in coastal areas, a solution other than monopiles or jackets as foundation structures is required. Floating structures offer a solution to this problem and also allow offshore wind turbines to be installed in rough conditions. Designs of floating constructions There are currently various designs of floating constructions. The four most common forms are the construction of a barge, semi-submersible, a floating pile or a tension leg platform. EEW pipes can be installed in all these types of floating constructions. Partnering up to develop new dimensions The offshore wind market has grown enormously in recent years and the trend is still rising. As the conditions and requirements change, the demand for foundations also changes. The current development we are facing is the establishment of floating foundations for offshore wind farms. Several changed conditions require new solutions for offshore wind foundations. The main reason for this need is that the installation areas are being planned far offshore in great water depths. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that most installation areas near the coast are already equipped with turbines. On the other hand, the wind at sea, far off the coast, is much stronger than in coastal regions. This means that a greater energy capacity can be generated. So far, there is no definitive solution for a floating foundation that is suitable for most cases. To construct foundations that can withstand the rough conditions of the open sea, but can also be produced in large quantities. This includes high and low-alloyed steels as well as stainless steel in addition to classic carbon steels. EEW Solutions for Process Pipes Special applications EEW Process Pipes find their application in constructions with extreme conditions. In-house treatment In order to process the pipes after production according to various specifications, we have extensive in-house treatments, such as various heat treatments like induction heat treatment, stress relieving, normalising, quenching and tempering, soft annealing as well as solution annealing. Testing facilities To complete the comprehensive services in the production of our process pipes, we offer our customers a variety of testing options. On the one hand, these include destructive testing methods such as impact tests in our in-house laboratory. strong solutions for rough surroundings Pipes for cryogenic applications EEW Group Products Line & Process Pipes Pipes for cryogenic applications Supporting the energy transition LNG is one of the transformational energies towards a sustainable energy supply. In order to meet the increasing demand for LNG, the infrastructure for liquefied natural gas is currently being intensively expanded. With its cryogenic pipes, EEW supplies a fundamental element for the construction of LNG terminals. Thanks to extensive research and development programs, EEW has established a production line for 36-nickel pipes in order to be able to pass on to its customers the advantages that the lower coefficient of expansion brings compared to stainless steel pipes. This enables simpler and safer piping concepts in terminal design. This also enables that the pipe system to accomodate different installation methods that are suitable for specific situations on site. Reasons to partner with EEW Group Steel grades In order to transfer liquids and gases with extremely low temperatures it is necessary to rely on the right material. EEW produces LSAW pipes made of nickel alloys and nickel based alloys (e.g. 3,5%, 9% or 36% Ni) for application in plant construction and LNG terminals. Production technology With state-of-the-art production technology EEW is able to produce high quality cryogenic pipes. Our specially trained welders are skilled in welding techniques capable of processing the sensitive nickel-alloyed material. Benefits An extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of 36% Ni alloy makes it a unique solution for cryogenic pipe-in-pipe systems. The system provides additional safety in case of any leakage. Moreover, this type of installation improves the flexibility of the global LNG trade supply chain. Applications for transport and storage of liquids at temperatures down to -196 °C N2 liquefaction temperature -253 °C H2-liquefaction temperature -269 °C He-liquefaction temperature Our Solutions Plates Due to the innovation of the pipe-in-pipe technology, the market for nickel alloy plates is very limited. EEW has longterm partnerships with suppliers of the pipe raw material to ensure continuous and high quality production. Pipes As the pipe-in-pipe system not only includes a nickel-alloyed inner pipe, but also an outer pipe, which can consist of a wide variety of grades depending on the design, EEW also offers these as a complete solution. Thus, the entire system is supplied from one source and can be installed directly in the project. Coating Similar to the outer pipe, the location and environment play a significant role not only for the choice of the outer pipe but also for the requirements of the coating. This is also customer-specific. For this reason, EEW offers poly-ethylene and poly-propylene coatings to protect the pipes from mechanical effects. Logistics EEW has a reliable supply chain and long-term experience when it comes to logistics. Precise packaging of the pipes ensures that the products are protected against weather and external influences. Depending on customer requirements, special packaging such as airtight packaging is used. Avoiding the collapse Buckle Arrestors EEW Group Products Line & Process Pipes Buckle Arrestors Special characteristics to prevent the collapse Buckle arrestors are a special product in the EEW Group portfolio. The pipes with special characteristics of wall thickness and consistency act as a safety component to prevent the collapse of a pipe. Buckle arrestors are installed at certain intervals in an offshore pipeline. Due to their special strength and wall thickness, they provide circumferential stiffening of the pipeline. If the pipeline collapses during installation, the buckle arrestor stops it and thus prevents the destruction of the entire pipeline. Reasons to partner with EEW Group Mechanical processing To enable quick and easy assembly of the pipeline during installation, EEW offers a comprehensive pipe finishing service. This includes the machining of the pipe ends so that they are perfectly shaped for direct welding. Assembly EEW can also produce the pup pieces and weld them together with the buckle arrestor to a full joint that then can be directly connected to the pipeline by the pipe laying company. Coating Another challenge is the coating of the entire buckle arrestor joint. To protect the buckle arrestors against external influences, it is possible to provide them with a protective coating. This Fusion-bonded epoxy and poly-propylene flame spray technology is subcontracted to qualified suppliers. Security of installation process The installation of an offshore pipeline usually takes from several months to years and comes with high costs. To protect the pipelines, which are often thousands of kilometers long, against collapse, buckle arrestors are installed in the pipeline at certain intervals. Should a collapse occur due to too much pressure, it is limited to as far as the buckle arrestor. Due to its special material and manufacturing properties, the component prevents a complete collapse. Forming of high wall thicknesses In order to meet the requirements placed on a buckle arrestor, it is necessary that the wall thickness of the component is significantly thicker than that of the rest of the pipeline. EEW is able to handle plates with a wall thickness of up to 70 mm (depending on diameter and material grade). Collapse persistance With both the S-lay and J-lay methods, there is a risk of the pipeline collapsing during installation due to rising water pressure. Because of its design, the Buckle arrestor prevents collapse and thus serves as a safety feature for oil and gas pipelines. The evolution of the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project represents a significant milestone for the US energy sector and a major achievement for the EEW Group. Through the immense scale of XL monopile production, EEW demonstrated the logistical resilience required to overcome global disruptions and ultimately support the energy transition. 2020: Breaking Ground in US Federal Waters In April 2020, EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH announced the successful fabrication of two heavy monopile foundations and transition pieces for the CVOW demonstration project. These structures, which weighed 877 metric tons each and featured a diameter of 7.8 meters, were the first monopile foundations ever installed in US Federal waters. This pilot phase was of profound importance as it was the first project to pass all phases of BOEM approval, effectively paving the way for the large-scale commercial industry that followed. 2022–2025: Massive Commercial Manufacture Following the successful delivery for the demonstration project, Dominion Energy awarded EEW SPC the contract for the full-scale commercial project in September 2022. By supplying the first offshore wind farm of this scale under construction, EEW Group has solidified its role as a pioneering leader in the emerging American market. The largest wind farm in Europe to date, Hornsea 1&2, is already standing on our monopiles. Now we are pleased to announce that the largest wind farm in the USA is also being built with our foundations. With the construction of Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind, Dominion Energy is getting closer to its self-imposed goal of carbon neutral power generation by 2050 and we are pleased that we can also do our part, said Michael Hof CSO of EEW Group. This new phase required the production of 176 XL monopiles, a task involving the processing of more than 200,000 tons of steel. The engineering requirements grew significantly compared to the pilot stage, with monopiles reaching diameters of up to 9.5 meters, lengths of 83 meters, and individual weights of up to 1,538 tons. Overcoming Complexities: Engineering & Logistics The logistical execution of this project required precision and resilience. Production started in May 2023, and over the course of two years, the EEW Group managed a complex transatlantic supply chain consisting of 27 separate shipments. Despite global disruptions such as COVID-19, the war in Ukraine, and adverse weather conditions that impacted the supply of materials, EEW maintained a schedule so efficient that no vessel was ever left waiting for its cargo. To achieve this, a specialized fleet transported the piles, with the average round trip from Rostock to Virginia taking 51 days. The technical complexity of the loading process was equally demanding. A high degree of precision was required to slide pipes into one another to a depth of more than 13 meters to optimize transport space. Using the Gantry System and 90 SPMT axles, the monopiles were moved in separate convoys and jacked at the quay for placement onto transport cradles. Precise positioning of the cradles was essential to safely secure the cargo, which typically weighed between 6,600 and 8,000 tons per journey. The final shipment was completed in August 2025, signaling the successful delivery of all 176 monopiles. Once construction is fully complete in 2026, the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind farm will stand as the largest in the United States, providing renewable electricity to approximately 660,000 households.
